Knitted
Lace Edgings
Adding bits of lace beauty to common objects
Knitted lace edgings are a beautiful addition to garments,
linens, and accessories. Because these trims are typically
done on just a few stitches, they are a practical way to explore
the structure and techniques of knitted lace. Great for introductory
lace knitters, as well as those wanting to advance their understanding
of what knitted lace is all about. Students will use both
written and charted patterns, and learn to make their own
charts. Methods for attaching lace, mitering, grafting, and
blocking will be covered.
Prerequisites:
Basic knitting skills. No experience in knitting lace needed.
Multicolor
Techniques in Lace Knitting
Achieving a pleasing balance of color and design
An
exploratory class in color theory, techniques and tips for
lace knitting with multiple colors.
- Changing
colors and hiding ends
- Design
schemes based on Fibonacci numbers and the Golden Ratio
- Working
lace intarsia
- Using
variegated yarns (what works for lace, what doesn't and
why)
Prerequisites:
Basic lace knitting skills.
Tapestry
Knitted Pillow
Use yarns for one-of-a-kind art-to-wear garments and home
decor
In
this class, you will knit a stunning throw pillow for yourself
or a gift. A simple motif is repeated in different orientations
to produce visually interesting positive and negative space
in somewhat the look of an abstract landscape. Your choice
of yarn colors and textures, together with the technique and
design methods taught in this class, will produce a distinctive
work of art! The tapestry knitting technique you will learn
in this class produces a sturdy, less stretchy fabric than
regular knitting. This is ideal for home decor such as the
pillow you will start knitting in class, or for side-to-side
constructed garments where gravity might otherwise distort
the shape when knitted in heavier yarns. Three methods will
be demonstrated so that you have a choice according to your
physical abilities and preference in knitting with a yarn
in each hand on a single row, or handling 2 yarns in one hand
on a single row, or just knitting one yarn at a time on a
row.
Prerequisites:
Basic knitting skills, some experience knitting with circular
needles is helpful.
Dollsized
Faroese Shawl
Turning tradition upside down
Fun
Fitted Flattering Fabulous Faroese
shawls are unique in their "butterfly" shape and
flattering fit. They can be plain or fancy, sturdy and warm,
or lacy gossamer. And even doll-sized! In the 3-hour class
you will learn the design structure of the traditional Faroese
shawl, and proven methods for adapting to neck-down knitting.
You will get a chance to practice by making a Faroese shawl
suitable for 18" dolls, bunnies and bears.Guidelines
for sizing, shaping, yarns, stitch choices, and lace design
placement will also be discussed.
Prerequisites:
Basic knitting skills.
Faux
Ikat Effects
Retain the bold areas of color when knitting hand-dyed multicolored
yarns
Learn
how to plan a project in hand-dyed yarn according to the length
of color repeat to create faux ikat effects. True
Ikat is a style of weaving that uses custom-dyed warp or weft
threads that are resist-dyed (e.g. tie-dye). When the threads
are woven, they will create an intricately designed fabric
that appears to have been printed. In this class, you will
learn how to achieve ikat-type effects in knitted fabric using
variegated yarn that has been hand-dyed. The result retains
the bold areas of color that we are often attracted to originally
in the unwound skein, rather than resulting in the colors
becoming broken visual mixed (and often muted) when knitted
randomly.
Prerequisites: Basic lace knitting and math skills.
