President's Message
Susan Duralde
Greetings to all!
Last spring the AKG board promised that by this fall you would see improvements in your member experience. The first major change was moving our meetings to the Dunwoody United Methodist Church. The space is warmer and their advanced technology enables us to provide a quality experience no matter where you or the speaker are located. In addition, we experimented with having a social event on a Saturday. Many members who can’t make Thursday evening meetings, found this a great time to connect with friends, new and old.
Going forward, we are planning more Saturday social knitting events. In addition, we are looking at organizing events at breweries around town, the possibility of multiple super stars each year and other events to diversify both our educational and social opportunities.

In closing, I’d like to give a shout out to Dolores Huerta. She died this week at 96. She was an indefatigable force for the rights of those who gather our fruits and vegetables. She founded and led the United Farm Workers Union.
Why do I bring her up? In the United States Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, you will find her photograph featuring a hand knit sweater she wore at all her rallies. The sweater has the Union’s emblem knit in intarsia.
Best,
Susan

Seaming Methods with Shaina Bilow
Have you tried seaming your knits together only to tuck them away, frustrated or
disappointed? With the right skills, seaming your knits using Mattress Stitch is not only easy, but enjoyable. Join Shaina for a comprehensive knitwear seaming presentation and learn how to get a professionally finished look on your knits. Throughout the presentation, you’ll learn essential seaming techniques as you practice the three types of seams encountered when putting your knits together. After this presentation, every seamed sweater, blanket, and accessory you make will look expertly finished.
Access the Prework (swatches and materials to bring to the meeting)

Shaina Bilow inspires joyful knitting through engaging workshops and thoughtful designs. In her workshops, you’ll find a patient and encouraging instructor who loves seeing the “lightbulb moments” as students start understanding tricky techniques and learning new concepts that they can apply to their knitting projects. She has over 20 years of extensive experience in the knitting industry as a teacher, yarn shop employee, yarn shop owner, professional knitwear finisher, published knitwear designer, small-batch yarn dyer, and more! Shaina has worked with thousands of knitters and brings an expert understanding of the craft to her workshops, helping students advance their skills while having a great time.

Last Month’s Meeting
What a fun party and great recognition of Doreen Lewis. Over 30 people, lots of good Los Hermanos food, free yarn, make-a-goodie-bag, craft stitch markers, knit bingo, and opportunities to meet new people. We definitely want to do this again!
Upcoming Events and Meetings
December 3 - In-Person only. Join us for Shop Night and a Holiday Potluck. We are not doing a gift swap this year, to allow us more time to shop, knit, eat, and socialize. Reminder that this will be at DUMC
2027 and Beyond
2027 is fast approaching and the program team has been working hard to fill the year, including workshops, superstar(s), and knit/game days.
We recognize that people work and between Atlanta traffic and nightfall, getting to the in-person Thursday can be tough. So we’re going to give Saturdays a try.
This will be the SECOND Saturday, 4:00-7:00 pm. These will be for social knitting, knit games, and maybe some surprises. We'll have these January - April Saturday knitting dates on the events calendar soon!
January’s meeting features a topic that members have asked about for years! We are going to be able to buy yarn custom-dyed in AKG colors! Carolyn of Swan City Yarns will do a Zoom presentation as she dyes, and then reveal sample finished skeins. We can then individually order from her website, select the base and size. There will also be an option for solids. You can learn more about Swan City Yarns here. https://swancityyarns.com/

February’s meeting focuses on Shadow Knitting with our own Jolie Elder. Also known as
Illusion Knitting, this technique produces hidden designs that reveal only from a certain angle. Jolie has some amazing examples! The presentation will also be Zoomed from DUMC. This will be followed by a for-fee in-person only workshop on Saturday, Feb 6. Registration will open soon.

March’s meeting features a Zoom presentation by Amy Sadler, on non-wool knitting. Amy is the founder and editor of Knitty.com, and a knitter since she was a little kid. She loves knitting things that don't make her head hurt, and she calls her designs "mindless knitting" because they're head friendly. The meeting will also be in–person, at DUMC.

April’s meeting topic has taken YEARS to get scheduled. It is a panel discussion about TKNG’s Master Hand Knitter certification, from both our Guild members who have participated, and those who have chosen not to. This will be a fun panel discussion on the pros/cons and what the journey is like. The panel is in-person, and will be Zoomed.

May is SuperStar Month! Charles Gandy is joining us in-person Thursday, May 6, and also giving four classes, two on Friday and two on Saturday. Class details and registration will be available later.
We have lots more in the planning stages. Any topics or presenters you would like? Drop us a note at programs@atlantaknittingguild.org or share with us at a meeting.
Updates will be posted in future newsletters and the AKG website.

RSVPing for future meetings - As noted above, we’ve set our 2027 meeting dates. All of the dates have been created in our events calendar. All future meeting dates will appear in the newsletter with links to RSVP. With the dates posted in each newsletter, you can plan ahead and RSVP (noting that when you do, you’ll receive event email reminders as we get closer to each date).
Email - If you are an AOL or Yahoo user, you may be seeing this newsletter for the first time in a long while. After a bit of sleuthing we found out that AOL & Yahoo are persnickety about some email settings. Those have been edited and we hope it resolves the issue permanently.
User profiles - As you'll see below, we’re working on a member directory. Be sure to log into the website and edit your profile! Editing your member profile is easy! Log into the website and visit https://www.atlantaknittingguild.org/profile/my/profile

Corrie & Kathy

We choose patterns or techniques to focus on for each project together, Find our group on the AKG calendar--RSVP for the Zoom link--and also we maintain an active presence on Facebook under "AKG KAL"
Our current KAL are designs by Eleanor Mortensen. She has 52 designs posted on Ravelry, from hats to sweaters; most have simple stranded colorwork that looks complex. So far, most of the KAL’ers have cast on, and a few are much further along. Still plenty of time to join! Not interested in these designs? Then pick what you like - always knit what brings pleasure - and join for the conversation!
